Nothing fancy just good food !!! We came here to get away from the crappy food around south beach and was definitely worth the 10 min ride !!!

This is a nice neighborhood resturant. Lots of the meals come with grits, which is a plus in my book. I got the shrimp and grits. There was a bit of a mix up with the waitress and whether or not I ordered steamed or grilled shrimp, but there was an order of each at the table and both were good.
Service was a bit slow, but I'm guessing that's because it was a busy morning. And a Wednesday at that... This is a nice neighborhood place, but not somewhere I'd frequent during my trips to the area. The food took quite a while to come out as well. This is a trend I've noticed that occurs el with black owned businesses. -

So... when I travel, I'm a foodie. I love finding good food where the locals go. I watched an episode of Anthony Bourdain's Parts Unknown: Miami and he talked about MLK restaurant. I was excited because he talked highly of the food and I love supporting black businesses.
We get here and its crowded. I was sure this was a good thing. Parking was challenging but after waiting a little, we found a spot. We found a table and our waitress brought us water to the table. Unfortunately, my water had a hair in it. Instead of being apologetic, the waitress shrug it off and gave me another cup as if she was bothered about me informing her of the hair in my cup.
We were kind of rushed to order but the service was still very slow. I ordered chicken and waffles. Average at best. The chicken was great but the waffle was basic. Nothing special about it. My boyfriend had grilled shrimp and grits. The shrimp was ok but the grits was bland and not as thick as I'm used to.
Paying was a pain because we had to ask for our check multiple times before my boyfriend ended up having to go to the counter to get the bill and pay. I'm all for my black businesses but customer service needs to be a priority. Disappointed. -

So I had to leave a review because of all of the "disgruntled" reviews if you will. If you're looking for a "fancy" restaurant like KeKe's in Orlando, this is not it. If you're looking for something "chic" like Another Broken Egg in Pines, this is not it. If you're looking for something equivalent to your grandmothers breakfast on Sunday morning, baby it doesn't get any better than this.
While the two aforementioned restaurants may be bigger and a little more "upscale", their food in no way shape or form compares to MLK. MLK is like walking into your grandmothers house and seeing all your cousins waiting for the food to be done. You all may complain that it's taking awhile but when it comes no one has time to complain because you're too busy stuffing your faces.
Yes parking is not ideal. Yes the restaurant is a whole in the wall but you will not be disappointed about the food. I guarantee you that!!
So don't pay attention to rest and try the best breakfast you'll probably find in the "not so good neighborhood". -
